Chapter one: The Newspaper Feature Story/Mrs.Kelly's Monster

The first chapter had many interesting facts that I did not know before. For example, the inverted pyramid was invented during the Civil War mainly due to the unrelability of the telegraph lines. The reporters would send the most important information first.

I also learned that there are two kinds of newspaper features: a news feature that is generally either used as a sidebar or a follow-up second day feature, and the timeless feature that can be in the newspaper at any time with no worries of revelancy. There are also at the most 15 different types of newspaper features. The main thing that you are trying to achieve with any feature is to humanize any "thing" feature.

The participatory story features the "Gonzo Journalism" method. This method lets the writer live in the shoes of their subject.

I really enjoyed the "Mrs. Kelly's Monster" feature. I liked how the writer humanized the Doctor and let the audience picture him at home with his wife and not just at the hospital. I thought the personification of Kelly's malformation into a monster had a great effect on the story. Also how the writer used the "circle technique" to represent the life cycle--- which I didn't know until I read further. :-)
