Addicted to the Odds

Jourdan Cable

I recently read a part one of three feature story about people with gambling addictions and how to treat them in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. I frequently visit their website because I am from Pittsburgh. About a month ago, the Rivers Casino opened in Pittsburgh.

The story is relevant; however, with the feature angle, it is a nice change to a highly discussed topic. I really enjoyed the first two paragraphs of the feature because the writer talked about two specific people and their problems with gambling. He features them throughout the entire story. I also like how the article adds in facts and statistics about gambling addictions without flat-out listing them. This was a very interesting read for me and I'm looking forward to the other two parts.

  1. Some great observations Jourdan. That is the way to go with a feature: start with specific examples (the two gamblers) to make it interesting. And merge your facts (statistics) with storytelling techniques that allow you to inform but also entertain.
