FoPoet Sanchez, it's life that's always knocking at the door

By: Taylor Smithson

I read a feature story in the Philadelphia Inquirer about internationally known poet, and activist, Sonia Sanchez. I always check the Philadelphia Inquirer because I am from South Jersey and it is considered local news to us.

The story was about Sanchez, a 75-year-old retired poet who lives her life to the fullest. She is totally down to earth and open to anything life hands her. She goes to rap concerts (such as Talib Kweli and Mos Def). She goes grocery shopping at local stores, plants flowers in her gardens in her front yard, but still makes time to call her best friends Bill Cosby and Danny Glover on the phone. She is also famous for her legendary parties she throws at her house in Germantown.

I really liked the article because I instantly fell in love with Sonia. I wanted to meet her and see her house and read her poetry. I love when an article can not only make me picture settings in my mind, but also make me want to be involved and know more.
