Weekly Post: The Super Natural

Jourdan Cable

This week I came across an old feature story about Josh Hamilton. The article was originally posted in May of 2008. I really enjoyed this feature story (After reading it, I also read his biography) and now he is one of my favorite baseball players in the MLB.

The article starts out with a chilling memory, "Josh Hamilton is at peace now, at peace even when he sleeps. "I used to have dreams all the time," he says. 'They were so real, I'd wake up and take a real deep breath in, like I was hitting the crack pipe.' " Right away, that intro was hook, line, and sinker...I had to read more of the story.

The story goes into more detail about Hamilton's addiction to drugs, and also how he overcame his addiction. The author was sure to add details about Hamilton's past (before his addiction.) Details included that he used to kiss his grandmother before every one of his baseball games in high school and that he attended church every Sunday. These details were key to the article because it gives the reader deeper understanding about Hamilton, his past, and how shocking it was for people to believe that he had a drug addiction.

The story ends with Hamilton talking about how he holds press conferences and will talk about his addiction and his faith to anyone, and the last line reads, "The Josh Hamilton Story never gets old, even for Josh Hamilton." I enjoyed the ending, along with the entire story because it really speaks for itself and it was simple.

  1. It is a nice feature Jourdan. I like the descriptive style of writing throughout. It also illustrates the writer's great observation skills. He takes in everything about Hamilton's appearance, emotions, etc.
