I was 10 years old when I heard the news. It was the second most exciting day of my life following only what I found out I was about to do.
Groggily, I woke up early one morning when my mom whispered, “I have a surprise for you, Caitlin.”
What could this surprise be? A puppy I thought or maybe a riding horse like I’d always wanted. Any of these would have sufficed.
I pulled myself out from underneath a sea of pink sheets and sat up. My imagination was racing once I looked up at my mom with a huge grin on her face.
“What’s the surprise mom, just tell me! I wanna know!”
“Well, I spoke with your uncle this morning…uncle Mark,” she responded, still smiling.
“Yeah, and? You talk to uncle Mark all the time, is he coming to visit us or something?”
“No, no, he’s not coming to visit us,” she said “that’s the thing, we’re going to see him!”
I hopped out of bed so quickly that my head was spinning; I couldn’t believe what my mom had just told me. I must be dreaming I thought to myself. I could feel cheeks getting warmer as my smile grew larger and larger by the second. My heart was racing faster than it ever had before.
“We’re going to Africa,” I screamed!
