Readings for today: Narrative writing

1.) Narrative and dialogue writing is a wonderful way to capture the audience. If you have an interesting quote to start out the story, the reader is more likely to keep reading. Also, using dialogue makes the story more humanized. Like Linda, the cancer patient, without her quotes within the story it would be bland and just straight facts. Dialogue spices up the story. Narrative does the same thing though, when the writer writes that Linda has to be carried into the veranda and she is sitting in the sun, the audience gets a picture of how weak she must be. Narrative shows and doesn't just tell.

2.) In order to use narrative and dialogue correctly you must study your surrondings. You have to make sure that you are getting all the elements of plot, character, setting, climax and ending. The writer also has to do research, interview numerous characters, and reconstruct dialogue from interviews. You have to earn the trust of the reader in order for both narrative and dialogue writing to work.
