1. The handout on feature types helped me understand the difference between investigative and narrative reporting. Investigative reporting has more facts whereas narrative has more opinion and emotion is the story. I also learned a lot about travel stories. I found that it is a good idea to keep two journals during your travels, one to document the story you are assigned to write and the other to jot down personal experiences to be used in future stories. Lastly, from the historical section, I learned that newspapers are not always good references.
2. After reading “The Stalking of Kristin” I found myself disgusted. I knew things like this happened but reading such an emotional story really hit home. People like Michael are released from prison early all the time due to similar reasons like “he was a really easy prisoner and they needed room.” That is what every victim fears and unfortunately, for Kristin, it came true.
